After her parents died in infancy, she was raised by her uncle, Rev. William Johnson Rutledge, a chaplain in the Civil War, a Methodist minister, and the originator of the Grand Army of the Republic organization.
At the time of her death, this anonymous note is found: "Mary Troy Kinney, wife of Hon Wm. C. Kinney, of Chicago, raised as a daughter by Wm J. and Lois Rutledge , died in Chicago, apr 1891, aged 48 years but few have lived or died with such evidence of superiority. In a long life I have never known any one who had more personal influence, even among strangers."
