Notes:
-Baptized the son of "George and Margeret Withington"
-He married secondly Elizabeth Smith in 1622 who immigrated to New
England with him and four children. He married thirdly, Margery (Turner)
Paul.
-He probably arrived August 1635 in New England on the ship "James",
and was the first ruling elder of the Dorchester church. He served as
selectman in 1636, and frequently appeared in town records.
-In addition to being ruling elder, he was a blacksmith by trade,
and one of the founders of the first Ironworks in America. Rev. Richard
Mather called him "Beloved Friend", and Rev Danforth said of him "A man
that excelled in wisdom, meekness and goodness". His will says he is
"about the age of 76 yeares of upon 77", and his estate was worth
L850,17s,3d.
-Many online sources give his mother as Margaret 'Pennington' or
'Pinnington' and give a marriage date for his parents. I have not been
able to track down the original marriage register in Leigh yet to verify
this is accurate.
