Mercedes "Mercy" Kinney was born in Jersey City and after high school graduation, attended and graduated in 1967 from Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Jersey City, receiving the Nursing arts and skills award for "clinical ability with good theoretical standing". After graduation, she was appointed faculty health and physical education teacher at Vernon Court Junior college in Newport, Rhode Island, maintaining employment in education and nursing. She had been living in Rhode Island on account of her father being resident engineer on the construction of the Newport Bridge. She had previously lived with her parents and brother in Michigan while her father was resident engineer in the construction of the Mackinac Bridge.
