Notes:
-Probably fled from Belgium to escape religious prosecution. He and his wife were frequently involved in the Courts, and Massachusetts settlers were accused of calling his wife "vile names". Part of their problem was likely a lack of church membership on their part. There is a strong family tradition that Jane his wife was a christianized Sandusky Indian, but this seems unlikely. Steven Flanders first came to Maine where he met his wife, and then to Salisbury, Massachusetts. He was educated and literate, and by the time of his death owned 74 acres. He spelled his name "Steven" as opposed to the British "Stephen".
-Mrs. Getchall, the next door neighbor of the Flanders in Salisbury had gone out to retreive a pumpkin from her pumpkin patch, when she saw Steven's wife Jane, and Mrs. Getchall screamed "Gett of my gound thou pennycoinquick. I am sheure you com to stell my corn". The flanders sued the Getchalls in court.
