"He could write and was active in public life, a landowner in 1650 and granted land in the
5th division of town lands. He was a selectman and one of the first assessors. Peter was sworn a freeman in May 1666 and served on committees to choose the houses to be made garrisons, and to build the first school and a new meeting house. He was a yeoman, cornet of the militia, and sat on the trial jury in 1670 and grand jury 1668 and 1673, constable in 1674. He was a representative in 1683, 1685, 1689, 1690 and 1698; representing Haverhill at the convention in Boston in 1689 in the "council of Safety."
